SEARCH FOR RAIDERS

TASMAN FLYING BOATS CARRIED 500LB BOMBS Diverting from their usual peaceful missions, the Tasman Empire Airways flying-boats, Aotearoa and Awarua, have carried 5001b bombs on several reconnaissance flights during this war, when they have searched for enemy surface raiders and checked unidentified vessels. Long-range searches made at the time of the loss of the Rangitane and other ships. This work was carried out under the direction of the R.N.Z.A.F., and as members of the Air Force Reserve the company's flight personnel on board wore Air Force uniforms. They were supplemented by personnel of the R.N.Z.A.F. One of the company's aircraft was the first large flyingboat to land on Chatham Islands when it called therG during a reconnaissance flight. It also alighted on Lyttelton Harbour on the return trip.
