Duke Of Gloucester And Native Ruler In New Guinea GOOD WORK AGAINST JAPS Rec. 2.30 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. British royalty met New Guinea royalty at Lae when Ninji, ruler of 20,000 natives in the highland region of Mount Hager, was presented to the Duke of Gloucester, who is touring New Guinea.
In contrast with the Duke's slouch hat Ninji wore a headdress of cassowary feathers ornamented with wood and metal from destroyed Japanese aircraft. Other sartorial features were a shell which Ninji wore in his nose and another enormour shell hanging around his neck and resting on his beard. He wore a tailpiece of palm fronds. Ninji, who was on a State visit to arrange fgr recruiting among his subjects, appeared in his ceremonial regalia at a parade of 300 members of the Royal Papuan Native Constabulary.
Addressing the natives the Duke of Gloucester said: "I am deeply grateful to you all, as members of our Empire, for' what you have done in the face of the Japanese invaders, and I wish you all the best of luck in your efforts to restore what you -had before the enemy came to these shores."
