ON DAY OF LIBERATION
N.Z. SERGEANT KILLED
HASTINGS, Wednesday.
After being four years a prisoner of war in Germany, Sergeant Wilfred James Kirkley was killed on the day of his liberation, according to advice received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Kirkley, of Raukawa, and formerly of Hastings. From the meagre information received by his parents, it is understood Sergeant Kirkley was killed in an accident in camp, which occurred while Americans were actually liberating prisoners held there. Sergeant Kirkley was taken prisoner on Crete over four years ago. Before joining the Army he was a prominent Rugby player and swimmer.
