TRANSHARBOUR TRANSPORT
Reference to his recent statement suggesting that a Royal Commission be set up to deliberate upon problems of transharbour transport, was made by Sir Ernest Davis, chairman of directors, in addressing shareholders at the annual meeting of the Devonpprt Steam Ferry Company, Limited, to-day.
supported by the Auckland Harbour In this the ferry company was Board, whose duty, it was to provide the berths and stages to and from which the company's vessels plied, said Sir Ernest. The Harbour Board recognised there was common ground for investigation of these matters, and a joint application - was made accordingly to the Government to establish a Royal Commission. Without some reasonable guide to the future in this regard, it would be unwise for either the company or the Harbour Board to contract itself into heavy obligations for new plant. Shareholders would no doubt appreciate the prudence and caution which prompted this action.
