"THE OLD BUS" AGAIN
Veteran Southern Cross Aloft
After Ten Years
USED IN AUSTRALIAN FILM
12.30 p.m. CANBERRA, this day,
After a test flight, the historic monoplane Southern Cross, which has been overhauled and repaired, has been granted a certificate of airworthiness. It will be used in an Australian-made film of the life of the late Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. Piloted by Wing-Commander Harry Purvis, engineer for Sir Charles on some of his famous flights, with a nephew of Sir Charles, WingCommander John Kingsford Smith, as co-pilot, the Southern Cross yesterday made its first flight in ten years. R.A.A.F. mechanics made the overhaul. "I think the old bus is running better than ever, despite the passage of years," said Wing-Com-mander Purvis. "I am very proud and happy to have flown, her once again. I could almost feel the shade of 'Smithy' standing in front of me."
