BECAUSE THEY DUG A TUNNEL from their prisoner of war camp in Silesia and escaped, fifty Allied airmen were shot by the Germans. This memorial, which contains the ashes of the murdered men, was erected near the camp by their companions. The story of the escape and subsequent building of the memorial is told on this page by Mr. John Walton, who was in the camp at the time of the escape.
