ALBERT PARK TUNNELS
PILLING TO COMMENCE With preliminary preparations nearing completion, the filling of the Albert Park tunnels is expected to begin to-morrow. Some delay in commencing the work, for which a contract of £54,437 was recently let, was caused by the discove?<y of an unsuitable strata in the soil which was to have been used in the manufacture of the filling material. This material will be in the form of sand and clay blocks, which will be placed in the tunnels one by one. Though the filling of the tunnels will be a laborious process, the method used is a positive one since the compaction is complete immediately the blocks are placed. The blocks, which will be manufactured on the site by a brick-making machine, will be cut to whatever shape is required to suit the internal shape of the tunnels. They will be taken into the tunnels on trolleys and the total required will run into millions. A condition of the tender was that the work was to be completed within a year.
