INDECENT ASSAULT

YOUNG MAN'S OFFENCE REFORMATIVE DETENTION "I cannot grant you probation," said Mr. Justice Cornish when a Maori, Gerald Hiku, aged 21, appeared before him in the Supreme Court this morning for sentence for indecently assaulting a female at Pipiwai on March 13. The prisoner, said his Honor, had been before the Court on three occasions, twice for. mischief and theft and once for assault on a female. He had already been granted probation and had served 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour. His Honor said that he was not going to inflict a heavy sentence, as it was still possible for Hiku to become a good Maori and a good citizen. He must, however, have a lesson, and the sentence would be 12 months' reformative detention.
