GOLF CLUB'S LOSS
PAVILION DESTROYED DESTRUCTIVE REMUBRA BLAZE Fire destroyed the major portion of the Remuera golf clubhouse at Meadowbank shortly after three o'clock yesterday afternoon. Many valuable silver trophies were lost and members' clubs and bags were destroyed in the locker rooms. Piles of twisted steel shafts were all that remained this morning of the contents of the 350 lockers in the clubhouse. The alarm, which was given by telephone, was answered by machines from Remuera and Parnell, followed by one from Ellerslie and later by a salvage van from the Central Station. Fanned by a fresh northerly wind, the fire had gained a strong hold when the brigades arrived. The club, which has a membership of about 200 women and 300 men, of whom about 70 are overseas, suffered heavily. In addition to buildings, furnishings ■ and trophies, valuable records, photographs and trophy boards were destroyed. The secretary, Mr. W. S. Ralph, who was working on the club's books at the time of the outbreak, was able to save the contents of the safe. The clubhouse and contents were insured with the Norwich Union Office.
