STERN BATTLES

Australians Ready To Fight Into Heart Of Japan NO CHRISTMAS COMPLACENCY 10 a.m. MELBOURNE, this day. The coming of the sixth wartime Christmas afforded no ground for complacency because stern battles lay ahead, said the Commander-in-Chief of the Australian forces, General Sir Thomas Blarney, in a special Christmas message. "Until we have completely eliminated the Japanese as a menace to the peace of the Pacific traditional Christmas greetings lose much of their temporal significance," he said. "This Christmas finds many Australian troops still in contact with the enemy and others ready to fight on further into the heart of Japan. The degree of their success depends so much on the measure of support given them by the Australian people that I would charge every good citizen to be with our men in heart and spirit, in danger and difficulty until the victorious end."
