OBITUARY
MR. JAMES A. SHERRIFF
The death occurred at his home, 677, Mount Eden Road, yesterday, of Mr. James Alexander Sherriff. He was 66 years of age. Mr. Sherriff was born in the Taieri Valley, Otago, and after completing his education, studied
accountancy in Dunedin. He came to Auckland in 1904, and after further commercial activities, joined the Brett Printing and Publishing Company in ■ 1912 as accountant. When New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd., was incorporated in 1929, he was appointed secretary of the company, a post which he held until May of the present year, when he retired owing to ill-health. Mr. Sherriff was a trustee and secretary of the Brett Printing and Publishing Company Provident Association from the time of its inauguration in April, 1927. He was a foundation member and an elder, and had served as treasurer of the Mount Eden Presbyterian Church. He was well known in bowling circles as a member for many years l of the Mount Eden Club, of which he was president in the 1937-38 season.
Mr. Sherriff was a Freemason, being treasurer at the time of his death of Lodge Maungawhau, No. 168. He was also a member of the Auckland Rose Croix Chapter, No. 266.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters and one son, who is a prisoner of war, having been captured at Singapore, where he was on the staff of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Ltd. A funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. J. D. Smith at Mount Eden Presbyterian Church "to-morrow morning. Interment will be at Hillsboro' Cemetery.
