PREFER SEA DUTY
WOMEN SERVE WITH FLEET
Many of the Norwegian girls who are serving on board Norwegian ships are experienced sailors, the United Nations Information Office reports. „ In view of the tremendous strain and danger of wartime service at sea, the Norwegian authorities have endeavoured to give these women shore berths wherever possible, but many have continued sea service from preference.
One Norwegian stewardess has been awarded the Norwegian War Medal and the British Empire Medal for her fearless behaviour when her ship was on its way to Malta. Before the ship sailed she was offered leave because of the hazardous trip which was to be undertaken in a convoy of only four vessels. She refused the offer.
Her ship sailed into the battle area and was attacked from the. air. The Norwegian stewardess Avent calmly about her duties, serving coffee and food on the bridge and at the guns until the ship reached Malta.
