TWO BOWLS OPENINGS
West End and Hallyburton Johnstone Clubs
Unfavourable weather conditions deterred Remuera and Ellerslie, two of the four bowling clubs which were to have opened the season to-day, from holding their function. The other two clubs, however, West End and Hallyburton Johnstone, braved the conditions, and held their openings in weather which improved considerably in the afternoon. HALLYBURTON JOHNSTONE CLUB There was a large attendance at the 16th DPfJiing ol the Hallyburton Johnstone Club. Tha Auckland Centre was represented by Mr. G. Clark'. The president of the club,' Mr. T. Falrhurst, welcomed the Visitors, and in officially opening the season spoke ol the good work of members In prepuing the greens, aaid the success which their eSorU would bring. An old member of the club, Mr. J. Boag, threw the first Jack and played the firft bowl. WEST END CLUB The 35th opening of the West End Bowling dub was held this afternoon, there being a larg« attendance. The president of the club. Mr. A. E r Whitten. welcomed those present and officially opened the club. The Mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. A. C. Allum. spoke, expressing good wishes to the club. The Auckland Centre was represented by the president. Mr. M. J. Walsh, a past president. Mr. A. St. J. Dignan. and three members, Messrs. G. Frieberg, W. M. Matheson. and H.. Wishart. Mrs. Whitten, wife of the president of the club, threw a silver jack which has belonged to the club for many years, ar.d an old member Mr. R. Bronell. played the first bowl.
