ORPHANAGE NEEDED
POSITION IN THE NORTH (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. The Bay of Island Hospital Board's institution at Kawakawa recently was embarrassed by having to house several large families of perfectly well children, whose mothers before entering the maternity annexe failed to make any provision for them. It was stated at-a meeting of the Hospital Board that there was a very real need for an orphanage in the north to cater particularly for the children of unmarried parents, or parents married "Maori fashion," one of whom had gone off and legally married someone else. Members said the nearest provision was in an overcrowded Auckland institution. It was decided to acquaint the Minister of Health, Mr. Nordmeyer, of the position and to seek his solution.
