A DIFFICULT TASK

AIDING EX-SOLDIERS HOUSING AND LOANS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. Frank admission that the Government was faced with no easy problem in the task of rehabilitation of exservicemen was made by the Director of Rehabilitation, Mr. F. Baker, addressing the annual conference of New Zealand Home Servicemen s Association. He assured the conference that the interests of home servicemen would be just as closely watched by the board as those of other servicemen. Among the oiificulties he mentioned was that ot housing, which was as great a problem, he said, as was that ot unemployment. Ten years ago there were some 7000 to 8000 men wanting houses immediately. They had something over 3500 men who were qualified waiting to go into State houses, and it was going to be some time before they could dispose of them. When it came to loans the board was faced with a similar position. Housing was also a difficulty in regard to rural settlement of soldiers. If the war finished now, he said, they would be faced with some 5000 to 6000 men needing immediate help to re-establish themselves In farming.
