COATES MEMORIAL
"WAS INDEED A MAN" As a memorial to the late Mr. J. G Coates a granite signpost, mounted on a low concrete platform, has been erected at the junction of the main highways from Auckland to Whangarei and Dargaville, about 90 miles north of Auckland. It is said that Mr Coates always remarked whenever he took the Dargaville turning on his way back to his farm at Matakohe from the south, Well, 1 m home again."
One of the three bronze tablets on the signpost, which is a gift of friends of Mr. Coates, reads: "To the memory of the Rt. Hon. Joseph Gordon Coates, P.C., M.C.and Bar M P 1878-1943, Prime Minister of New Zealand, 1925-28, Member of Parliament for this district froml9ll until his death. Farmer, soldier, statesman. He was indeed a .man. Following this is a Maori inscription, which, when translated, reads: "Rest thou, O father, upon the great work you have performed for pakeha and Maori alike."
