BALKANS BOMBING
Heavy Strafing Of Oil And Rail Targets In Rumania RAIDS FROM RUSSIAN BASES Rec. 10 a.m. LONDON, June 7. "Strong forces of heavy bombers attacked the oil refineries in the Ploesti area and also railway yards at Brasov, in central Rumania, and Pitesti, north-west of Bucharest," says a Mediterranean air communique. "Thirty-four enemy planes were destroyed during the day for the loss of 16 heavy bombers and 17 other planes. We flew more than 2300 sorties."
A Rumanian communique reports that British and American planes yesterday made terror attacks on Ploesti, Kronstadt, Galati and Craiova, and also Raminic and Balcea, causing damage and casualties. The first combat mission of United States bombers based in the Soviet Union coincided with the opening of the invasion operations from England. All the American bombers returned after a successful bombing of Galati aerodrome, in Rumania. A correspondent quotes one of the pilots as saying: "We are jubilant over a good day's work."
Galati, a port on the Danube, is an important German base in a key position.
