LONDON, June 8.
Supreme Allied Headquarters announced to-night that the town of Bayeux in Normandy has been captured and that Allied troops have also crossed the Bayeux-Caen road at several points. Bayeux is five miles inland from the coast.
Allied Headquarters stated at midnight that operations in France are running pretty well to schedule, but emphasised that a tough time lies ahead. The enemy attack in the Caen area may be regarded as a foretaste of what may come very soon.
Havoc planes of the Ninth Air Force yesterday smashed a German Army headquarters which was carefully hidden in a wooded area in the rear of the battleline.
Enemy air opposition slightly stiffened during yesterday. By evening the Tactical Air Force had destroyed 23 German aircraft and damaged others. The R.A.F. lost 23, mainly by anti-aircraft fire, during the widespread operations behind the enemy lines.
German radio says strong Allied air formations attacked Lorient and Nantes early to-day and adds that simultaneously dummy parachutists were dropped in the Saint Brieuc area.
Paris radio reported to-night that the Allies have made two new landings under cover of artificial fog—in the Pas de Calais area and at Cape de la Hague, at the tip of the Cherbourg peninsula.
The Paris radio commentator Jean Paquis says the Allies have landed twelve divisions, during the first 36 hours of the invasion. The Germans have not yet thrown in their reserves or used their new type of weapons.
