SENT TO BORSTAL
YOUTH ABUSES PROBATION
"In spite of the fact that leniency had been shown to you and you had an opportunity of going straight, you committed further offences a few days later," said Mr. J. Morling, S.M., in the Police Court to-day to Alan Robert Hargreaves (18), a labourer, who appeared and admitted charges of stealing a kit of tools and a pair of gloves of a total value of £3 2/6, unlawful conversion of a motor cycle valued at £20 and a motor car valued at £300, and of receiving four gallons of petrol valued at 11/4. Detective-Sergeant Aplin said Hargreaves had been receiving a wage of £5 3/4 a week. He had several previous convictions, and on April 6 he had appeared before the Court at Papakura, when he was admitted to 12 months' probation on a charge of unlawfully converting a motor car to his own use. On May 5, Hargreaves, in the Police Court in Auckland, was again placed on probation for conversion of a motor cycle, while on May 11 he had appeared at Papakura on a theft charge, and again got probation. That particular offence had been committed about the same time as the first charge on which he was admitted to probation. "It is quite clear this youth has abused the leniency shown to him." Hargreaves was committed to a Borstal institute for two years.
