WORKERS COMPLAIN
NEW LYNN TRANSPORT LATE ARRIVAL IN CITY Dissatisfaction felt by residents of New Lynn and surrounding districts regarding the present bus service came to a head last evening when a meeting which lasted three hours was held at New Lynn. There was a large attendance and the Mayor, Mr. S. Rickards, presided. Complaints were made by workers that they lost a proportion of their wages through latJ arrival at work in the city. It was stated that girls working in factories sometimes lost time through not being admitted to the premises where they were employed within an hour of starting time.
Alternatives put to the meeting were a municipal or State-controlled service, or a community-owned service run on co-operative lines. The meeting strongly supported these suggestions Another suggestion was that the Avondale buses which feed the trams be continued to New Lynn, for which no feeder buses were at present provided.
Representing the Minister of Transport, Mr. N. C. Angus, of Wellington, read a statement made by the No. 1 Licensing Authority, indicating that if the service were not substantially improved remedies would become necessary.
As chairman of a committee set up last year by the Authority, Mr. Rickards undertook that he 'would convene a meeting of the committee to take up the proposals put forward by the New Lynn residents.
