GAINS IN CHINA
RECAPTURE OF PASS Area Held By Japanese For Six Years N.Z. Press Association—Copyright Rec. 11 a.m. CHUNGKING, Mar. 15. Chinese dispatches report the recapture of Helsingkwan, or the Black Dragon Pass, strategic gateway to the south-western Shansi province, which the Japanese have held for six years. The Chinese are now able to extend military activity north-east into Shansi.
Two waves of Japanese bombers raided the Allied air base at Suichwan, in Kiangsi Province, without causing damage. Ten Japanese bombers attacked and slightly damaged the aerodrome at Hengyang, in Hunan Province.
Medium bombers and long-range fighters of the Fourteenth Air Force on Monday bombed the Kiungshan aerodrome and the seaplane anchorage on Hainan Island, South-east China, says General StilwelPs communique. Five of the 12 intercepting Japanese fighters were shot down. Three others were probably destroyed on the ground.
Fighter-bombers also hit an important railway bridge at Puchi, in east-central China. One American plane is missing from these operations.
