SYNTHETIC RUBBER
WIDE ADOPTION IN BRITAIN A special allocation of 50 tons of synthetic rubber from the United States has been strictly tested by the British Rubber Federation in 24 products with such excellent results that the whole output-of the British rubber industry now consists of three-quarters of synthetic to only one-quarter of natural rubber. "The behaviour of synthetic rubber," the federation states in a survey of its war work, "Is now being observed on the bombers which go to Berlin and in R.A.F. dinghies; In the Navy's hose, depth charge tubing and rubber used for watertight doors; in the Army's respirators, capes and coats for dispatch riders; in ebonite at radio-location stations; hose for the National Fire Service; belting for coal mines. Synthetic has even been tested out in football bladders." The federation regards the American manufacture of synthetic "as one of the colossal o achievements of the war." The technical Stan's of the federation's 289 members have been working for rubber control without payment through a technical advisory committee under the chairmanship of Mr. S. A. Brazier, manager of Dunlop's technical department in Manchester.
