PLANES IN PACIFIC
Enormous Expansion Of American [Navy British Official Wireless Rec. 1.30 p.m. RUGBY, Mar. 14. Colonel Knox, Secretary for the Navy, states that the American Fleet would expand in 1944 at the daily average of 12 sea-going ships, says a Washington message. He said the Navy needed, almost 500,000 more men to meet the goal of 3,000,000 by the end of the year.
Vice-Admiral Randall Jacobs estimated the strength of all naval services, including the Navy, marines and coastguard to be 3,700,000 by the end of the year.
Colonel Knox added that the fleet has increased from 913 ships on January 1, 1942, to 4167 by January 1, 1944, and added that carrierborne aircraft were destroying Japanese planes at the rate of over 13 to one. In the Central Pacific offensive over 600 enemy planes had been destroyed since November. The American losses were 45.
He pointed out that the enemy was caught repeatedly with large numbers of aircraft on the ground. Forty per cent of the 600 were destroyed on the ground.
