MAORI LAND CLAIMS
SETTLEMENT EXPECTED (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The announcement in the Gover-nor-General's speech, at the opening of Parliament, that steps were to be taken finally to settle Maori land claims, was mentioned with apprecition in the House of Representatives last night by the representative of the native race - on the Executive Council, Mr. Tirikatene, who remarked that he knew the Government was sincere in bringing this claim to finality. The Maori people did not know whether the benefits were to be territorial or financial, he said, but if finance was to be part of the agreement they would prefer to let the Government set aside any payment until after the war. Any such amount could be used as the Government saw fit to promote quick and positive victory.
