LICENSING POLLS
VOTING ON TUESDAY
WIDER INTEREST SHOWN
More interest than usual is shown in the licensing committee elections which take place next Tuesday. For the Auckland Licensing Committee, which comprises the three electorates of Auckland East, Auckland Central and Auckland West, a. temperance ticket of four clergymen and an officer of the Salvation Army, has been put forward.
The licensing committees consist of six members, five elected under | Parliamentary franchise, the sixth j being a magistrate of the district, i who acts as chairman. The committees are given wide powers in dealing with licenses, and reports are made to the meetings in connection with the licenses held in their districts. The Parliamentary rolls used for the general election last year are being brought up to date for use at the elections, which will be conducted on much the same lines as those for electing members to Parliament. New rolls will not be printed, but recent applicants, who have been advised that their names have been included, may vote by declaration. The sale of intoxicating liquor in all districts where pons are being held will be illegal after noon on polling day. . In Auckland, committees will be elected in the City, Remuera, Onehunga and Waitemata districts. At Otahuhu, the number of nominations was equal to the number of seats, and therefore no election is necessary. There are other districts which are no license areas, and have no hotels. Polling on Tuesday will be between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
