ITALIAN FLEET
Further Explanation Of U.S And British Attitude
ALLIED SHIPS FOR RUSSIA
British Official Wireless Rec. 1.30 p.m. RUGBY, Mar. 10. Statements by President Roosevelt and Mr. Churchill about the disposal of the Italian Fleet have been further explained in London to-day. It appears that last year the Soviet asked for some Italian warships to be allocated to their Navy in view of the part taken by the Russian forces in bringing about the Italian collapse. , , It is not forgotten in Moscow that the Italian Army took part in the invasion and devastation of South Russia. The Western Allies regarded the Russian request with great sympathy, but it is doubtful if the Italian warships, which were built for the Mediterranean, would be suitable for use in the rough waters of the north and they could not yet enter the Black Sea. , „ It was, therefore, proposed to allocate to the Soviet Navy certain equivalent warships from the fleets of the Western Allies, entirely suited for the arduous duty in the Arctic. It is, presumably, with this subject that the discussions, stated by President Roosevelt to be proceeding, are now involved.
