TRAFFIC RESUMED

GISBORNE HIGHWAYS

ONE TRAIN STILL MAROONED

(0.C.) GISBORNE, this day. Highway damage caused by the storm was sufficiently repaired by this morning to enable traffic to be restored on all routes leading out of Gisborne. The Morere and Tinitoro loutes between Gisborne and Wairoa opened early to-day.

Conditions beyond Wairoa are still bad, however, and .road services are operating only as far as Wairoa. Rail service between Gisborne and Wairoa has been resumed. The position south of Wairoa is unchanged and work is proceeding over the live miles between Raupunga and Waikoau where numerous slips occurred. The rail link from Wairoa to Napier may be opened to-morrow or on Monday. Traffic on the Gis-borne-Motuhora branch line is still restricted. Trains are operating from Gisborne to Puha and connecting with the bus service from Motuhora.

One train is still marooned between Waikohu and Puha, and, though this section may be opened in a day or two, there will be no resumption of train traffic beyond Rakauroa for perhaps a week or two. The washout between Rakauroa and Matawai presents unusual difficulties owing to the shortage of bridge building materials and it is now regarded as possible that the line will have to be deviated.
