FELL DOWN OLD WELL
BOY ESCAPES DROWNING
ROPE USED FOR RESCUE
When two small boys were looking for blackberries in a vacant section in Surrey Crescent on Saturday afternoon one of them, aged ten, suddenly disappeared. He had fallen down a well concealed in the tangled undergrowth. His companion ran for help and was fortunate to find somebody working in a nearby boot factory. A rope was rushed to the section and the boy was rescued. It was discovered that the well was 32ft deep and contained 22ft of water. The boy was clinging to a small ledge when the rope was lowered to him. He managed to secure the rope around his waist while holding on to the ledge. He suffered no injuries in his fall although his mother said to-day he had been "shaky" for some hours. He insisted on going to school this morning. . The section is near the St. Columba Church and adjacent to the Grey Lynn School. It is believed that there are a number of other wells concealed in the section, and that the St. Columba Church is built over one. School children in the district have been warned of the danger, and investigations are being made by the police.
