FOOD SUPPLIES
Allow me to congratulate Mary Miller on her very excellent letter which you published on Wednesday last. We have the Gilbertian situation in New Zealand, which would be humorous if it were not so serious, of the Government endeavouring to grew vegetables and asking the people to "Dig for Victory," at the same time giving every possible discouragement to the thousands of small growers as well as the larger commercial growers engaged in the production of the great range of fruit and vegetables. Ceiling prices and unnecessary controls appear to be the result of political or union pressure, and to counteract this the Government attempts to replace this private enterprise with State control. The result—greatly reduced production. Huge sums of money have and are being spent by the Government in buildings for the Internal Marketing Division: the buildings are certain to be "white elephants", when the war is over. J. HARDY.
