THEFT OF BICYCLE
(0.C.) WANGANUI, this day. How a constable's cycle, which was stolen from the rear of a theatre, was recovered two months later, was told in the Wanganui Magistrate's Court when Herbert Skipper Gawler, an aircraftman, aged 19, pleaded guilty to the theft of the machine valued at £8. Detective-Sergeant J. F. Robertson, in outlining the facts to Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., said the cycle was seen in the possession of a Maori b3 r a constable. Accused admitted that he took the cycle. He painted it, but said he had intended to abandon it near the police station, which does not sound very feasible. It appears that the cycle was left at his home by the accused when he returned to duty, and was discovered only when he lent it to the Maori. Gawler was convicted and admitted to probation for 12 months.
