LABOUR DAY
WEEK-END BREAK HOLIDAY SEASON OPENING Although many people have acquired the feeling that "Labour Day is always .wet,"* the week-end holiday, regarded as the opening of the summer season, is welcome to all those fortunate enough to receive it. The Government has ordered that Monday be observed as a normal holiday, and only those industries vitally important to war production will carry on as usual. The use of this last long week-end before Christmas has been curtailed this year as on recent occasions by the petrol restrictions, but many motorists have saved sufficient, petrol to make use of their cars. Many have had batteries recharged in the past few weeks in readiness for a briel holiday. Railway accommodation is reported by officials of the Department to be practically unavailable, and no further reservations can be accepted for any of the. principal lines. A train which left for Whangarei at 9.15 this morning and will run again at the same time on Monday is the only extra service provided. Normal special week-end trains to Wellington will run as usual. Accommodation problems, in addition to the difficulties of travel, will tend to keep many at home. Hotels and boardinghouses at holiday places are reported to be completely full in most cases. Shops' Close Holiday The majority of shops will observe a close holiday until Tuesday, and nearly all city offices will remain closed for the same period. In industries where work goes on special rates of pay \i.'ill rule, according to' the terms of the awards. Transport services will in general operate on the same time-table as on week days, though in some cases a Saturday service may be maintained. The Auckland Transport Board, the Devonport Steam Ferry Company and the greater number of bus companies will observe the weekly time-tables. On many previous occasions the Auckland 'Cricket Association has opened its season on the Saturday before Labour Day and continued on the holiday with all-day games, but this year it has not been possible to "prepare the wickets for play, and the season is to open next Saturday. The b? sp l >f '" will be commenced on Monday at Carlaw Park, and open day golf matches will be played at several clubs over the week-end. The combined Services' boxing championships will be held in the Town Hall on Monday and Tuesdas' nights. The spring meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club, which started at Epsom to-day, will be concluded on Monday, and the Waikato Hunt Club will meet at Cambridge.
