GENERAL CONFERENCE

DELEGATES IN CHRISTCHURCH

The National Conference of the Y.W.C.A. of New Zealand is at present in session at St. Andrew's College, Christchurch. Representatives are present from Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Napier, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, Timaru, Milton and Dunedin. The main theme of the conference is a study of the Christian basis of the New Social Order. This study was j)repare<l *>y the World s Y.W.C.A., and was introduced at the church service at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church by the preacher, the Rev. S. C. Francis. A main aspect is a series of lectures towards international understanding. These lectures include:—"lnternational Understanding " by -Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland; "The U.5.A.," bv Mrs. L. G. Pocock; "China," by Mr. Winston Rhodes; "Germany," by Dr. O. H. Frankel and Mr. Alan Brassington. During the course of the week's conference the delegates will carry out an inquiry into the effect of the war on the life of women in New Zealand. This inquiry will arrive at certain conclusions under the leadership of Mrs. Leicester Webb. At the official reception which was tendered to the conference by the Christchurch Y.W.C.A., the Mayoress, Miss E. Couzins, greeted the conference on behalf of the City of Christchurch, and welcomed Mrs. David Smith, national president of the Y.W.C.A., and all members of the conference. . Auckland delegates include: —Mrs. Appleby, Mrs. Cosgrove, Miss Frances Mudford, Mrs. Osborne, Miss A. Scott, Miss- Betty Anderson, . Miss Olga Drumrnond, Miss Pat Neville, Miss Nyra Stubbs, Mrs. E. Bond, Mrs. T. Derrick, Miss Joy Maydon, Miss Joan Nursford, and Miss B. Webber.
