SPRING RACING

beau vaals in form

BALFRON and the guineas

Last season's Railway Handicap winner, Beau Vaals, is attracting attention at Takajiini, where he is again displaying his former dash, encouraging the belief that jie will be very near his best by the time of the Avondale meeting. The Vaals gelding looks very well, and sprinted nicely last Saturday. Likely to see a short price in the Avondale Guineas, Balfron's admirers should h ave little cause for anxiety in his next iontest. Since winning the Sylvia Park Handicap he has done well, and looks unproved by his recent outing, so the guineas should not be beyond him. Having had an auspicious opening of his four-year-old career, Representative is now expected to make his mark as a Eandicapper in the Avondale Cup. Although the Nightmarch gelding's efforts jgst term were inconsistent, following good spring form, there is little doubt that his Wellington and Christchurch trips did not agree with him. He should be a better horse this term. Two-year-olds are now being sent along In earnest, and last Saturday morning sevA-al were sprinted, some from a barrier start. Among those to shape well were Sir Leon, Ivala and Beau Volo. My Lord Chancellor Lord Chancellor will be seen in a new role when he tackles the open sprinters next week. He is rapidly reaching his best again, but the chances are that he may need the run, even though there is vet time for him to make further headway before the meeting. The Mr. Standfast four-year-old looks particularly well. Lapidarian was forced to miss the pakuranga Hunt Cup through an injury to his shoulder. He has since made a recovery, and may contest the Kingsland Hurdles, a mile and three-quarters event, which would suit him admirably if he were at his best. As a result of recent defeats, he has reached a very favourable position in the handicaps. His owner, Mr. A. Walker, is again exercising Lapidarian's half-brother, Good Armour. Monte Cristo' is working better than was the case before the Pakuranga meeting, and he may do better in the Avondale Cup. His stable mate, Foxola, has come in well and is displaying the dash which usually characterises her track efforts. This Foxbridge mare may start in the Avondale Flying Handicap. Should Be Early Winner Yorkish looks a lot better for his race at Pakuranga, where he was drawn unfavourably at the barrier in the Sylvia Handicap. He showed fine speed in the race and will improve greatly by the outing. He may be an early winner. Peter Gregor, which had been having an easy time, is again being sent along in his work. A winner at Trentham in July, Peter Gregor promises to add interest to any sprint event while the tracks remain in an easy condition. Hazroy has been off the scene for a few days owing to a slight rick, but his debut may not now be long delayed. A repetition of his track form will find the Hazrat gelding among the early winners. Indian Princess and Sir Bian have resumed under H. E. Gray's guidance. These horses wintered excellently on their owner's property, and are ready to undergo an immediate preparation. • They will reappear during the spring campaign. Idris is the name bestowed on the Cambria Park—Wye filly in E. Pope's stable. She is doing well and possesses a nice action. The same trainer has taken over the preparation of the Vaals mare Precisely, recently trained at Te Awamutu. Since coming to Takanini she has been tried over a pony hurdle on a couple of occasions, and showed a natural aptitude for'jumping.
