FISH AND GAME
■ ACCLIMATISATION TEAR The annual report of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society for the year ended March 31 states that the expenditure, £1661, exceeded the revenue, £1333, by £328. No revenue from shooting licenses was obtained owing to the close ■ season in 1942, but the fishing revenue exceeded expectations. During the year 1320 pheasants were liberated, a considerable decrease of the number usually put out. Reports from, country districts showed that the birds were plentiful and in good condition. Owing to the close season, the vermin control board's funds were exhausted by September 15, and the board advised the council that no further refunds would be made. The council considered that the vital work should not be allowed to drop for want of funds, and continued paying for hawks,. stoats, weasels and hedgehogs out of its own funds. The report said that restrictions on travel made conditions difficult for anglers. The fishing revenue to March 31, with a month to go, was £1036.
