NAZIS TAKE HOSTAGE
French Resident-General In Tunisia MYSTERY SURROUNDS FATE Rec. 2 p.m. LONDON, May 10. Referring to the. fate of Admiral Esteva, French Resident-General in Tunisia, the Daily Telegraph's correspondent ai Tunis says the Germans told him evacuation was anticipated and he must leave with their forces. The* admiral replied that he was a sailo;: and would stay with his ship. It is reported he threatened members of the Gestapo with a revolver, but was overpowered and carried off, manacled, to a plane to be taken to Europe. Another report says an R.A.F. fighter brought down a plane off Cape Bon. this is not yet verified, but it seems to be established that the Germans blew up- Admiral Esteva's personal corvette two or three days ago. Tunis gendarmerie expressed the opinion . that Esteva was likely to be taken to Italy as a hostage. Admiral Esteva was formerly Com-mander-in-Chief of the "rench Naval Forces in the Far Ear .ind Director of Maritime Aeronaut ; at the Air Ministry. He was alsc ".t one time a member of the Higher " Taval Council and Inspector-Genera. of the Maritime Forces.
