NINETY-SIXTH BIRTHDAY

Mrs. Rhoda Watkins, an old resident of the Auckland province, to-day celebrates her 96th birthday. Born in England, Mrs. Watkins arrived at Lyttelton in the sailing ship. Eastern Empire, in 1865, the voyage taking five months. She married Mr. Edwin Watkins, of Christchurch, formerly of Wales. They remained in Canterbury for a number of years and later moved to Raglan and Kakahi. Mr. Watkins died in 1919.

Twenty-one years ago Mrs. Watkins lost her sight. She lives with a daughter, Mrs. R. E. Hardley, 17, Curran Street, Heme Bay. Of a family of nine children, two sons and two daughters are living. There are 30 grandchildren and 56 greatgrandchildren.
