RETRIAL OF TOBACCONIST
■ ■ .. The retrial of Alexander Teece Smith, tobacconist, Queen Street, 45 (Mr. W. W. King) on a charge of having received tobacco and cigarettes knowing the goods to have been stolen was taken to-day before Mr Justice Fair and a jury. Outlining the case for the Crown, Mr. G. S. R. Meredith, said a witness who had stolen tobacco and cigarettes from a store at Coromandel, and had been convicted, would state that next day he sold some of the tobacco and cigarettes to accused for £30. He would say another man made the arrangements for the sale, and he received the money partly in cash and partly by cheque. This man would testify that he indicated to the accused that the goods had been stolen. Accused, when asked by the police for an explanation, admitted receiving the goods, but denied any statement by the seller that they were stolen. He admitted he was suspicious about the goods from the fact that the goods were delivered in sugar sacks. (Proceeding.)
