HEAVY ALLIED ASSAULT Rec. 2 p.m. LONDON, May 9. A communique issued in Algiers in part says the French forces with "the First Army considerably advanced over difficult country and ■occupied the key town of Zaghouan. "The Eighth Army, in the southern sector, also made some advance, and captured a number of prisoners. The strategic air force bombers and lighter-bombers kept the Sicilian Straits under constant surveillance. During these shipping sweeps several vessels were attacked. A strong force of tactical air force bombers and -strategic air force fighters heavily •attacked an airfield on Pantellaria. destroyed several planes on the ■ground, hit the airfield's buildings "and left large fires. According to another message from Algiers 100 air force bombers hammered Pantellaria, after which fighter-bombers added to the damage. This was the heaviest attack yet made against Mussolini's "Malta."
