PAYMENT IN SCRAP

FRENCH LAND TAX Throughout France the land tax must, as in Belgium, be paid not in money but in non-ferrous metals, according to a law published in the Gazette Official, which establishes a scrap copper equivalent to the monetary amount of the tax. Those unable to pay in copper may offer other non-ferrous metals according to the schedule of equivalents. Any taxpayer unable to raise the whole amount of metal demanded may pay the difference in cash, but at twice the nominal amount of tax. The French Government thus disavows its own currency as legal tender even 'for the payment of taxes.
