WINTER PRICES

FRUIT, VEGETABLES RETAIL AND WHOLESALE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Prices for apples and pears 'and leading winter vegetables are fixed in a price order gazetted to-night, operative from Monday, and applicable to all sales, including auctions. Customarj'- seasonal movements in the prices of apples and pears will be dealt with in amendments to the order. No apples will be more than 4d per lb retail for delivery at shops, this tpp price being for the best grade and largest sizes of Golden Delicious, which are just coming on the market. For all others of the best varieties of dessert apples the top price is 3ad per lb, and for medium varieties in the same grade the top price is 3d per lb. Maximum wholesale and retail prices are fixed for carrots, kumaras, parsnips, pumpkins, swedes and turnips. The Price Tribunal has stated its intention, by an amending price order or by a series of amending price orders, to provide for such alterations to the prices fixed by this order as may be warranted by conditions prevailing from June 30. Cost of Apples and Pears For the best sizes and varieties of cooking apples the highest price is 3Jd per lb. Rates for other cooking apples are 2£d per lb, and with outsizes in some varieties as low as 2d. Retail prices of pears range from s£d to 4Jd per lb. Details of retail prices of dessert apples of fancy grade are:— Golden Delicious, 4d per lb for larger sizes, down to 3d for smaller sizes, 2/7 to 2/1 for 101b lots, and 10/ to 7/9 a case. Delicious and Richard and Granny Smith, 3id to 3d, 2/4 to 2/1, 8/9 lo 7/9. Jonathans and Sturmers, 3d to 2ld, 2/1 to 1/9. 7/9 to 6/6. Cookers: Washingtons, 31d to 3d, 2/4 to 2/1, 8/9 to 7/9; Lord Wplseleys,. 3d to 2ld, 2/1 to 1/6, 7/9 to 5/6. Other varieties are cheaper. Pears.—Winter Cole, Winter Nelis and Josephine, 5Jd per lb, 3/9 for 101b lots, 14/6 a case. Others, sd, 3/6 and 13/6. Wholesale Prices Where shopkeepers have to pay more inward freight than usual, prices may be increased by a maximum of a half penny a pound. The range of wholesale prices for fancy grade apples fixed is:— Golden Delicious, from 8/3 a case for larger sizes, down to 6/3. Delicious and Richard. 7/3 to 6/. Granny Smith, 7/ to 6/. Jonathans, 673 to Til. Sturmers, 5/9 to 3/. Washington, 7/3 to 5/9. Lord Wolseleys, 6/3 to 4/. Commercial grade dessert apples are from 6d to 1/3 cheaper than fancy grade. The wholesale price of Winter Cole, Winter Nelis and Josephine pears, fancy grade, is 12/3 a case. Other pears, 11/3 for fancy. Range of Vegetable Prices The following list gives four prices for each of the vegetables controlled, being firstly the maximum wholesale price per cwt in the North Island, secondly the maximum wholesale per cwt elsewhere, thirdly the maximum retail price per lb in the North Island, and fourthly the maximum ' retail price per lb elsewhere: Carrots, 15/, 12/, 2Jd, 2d.
