OBITUARY

MRS. JESSIE HARPER

The death has occurred of Mrs. Jessie Harper, of Leigh. She was born in Edinburgh in 1856. After a period in Ceylon, where she was married, the family came by the Lusitania to Auckland in 1889 and they resided here for a year before taking over the hotel at Leigh, and subsequently the store and post office. Mrs. Harper held the position of postmistress for nearly 30 years. Her husband lost his life while recovering the treasure of the wrecked Elingamite at the Three Kings Islands in 1907. Mrs. Harper is survived by a family of five. There are 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grand-children.
