PATRICK BEATEN

MATCH WITH SLOAN STOPPED (0.C.) SYDNEY, Monday. The Australian" lightweight and welterweight champion, Vic. Patrick, had his second loss in 36 contests, when Les Sloan was declared the winner at the close of the ninth round at the Rushcutter Bay Stadium on Saturday night. Patrick's left arm and ear were injured. His manager, Mr. E. McQuillan, called the referee, ■Mr. J. Wallis, to the corner when the round ended, and said Patrick was unable to .continue. The arm was hurt during Patrick's engagement with Bill de Belin in November, and kept him out of action for four months. The Stadium medical officer said an X-ray examination was necessary to ascertain the damage. Although • Patrick did not box to his customary standard, he held the margin in the opening rounds. Sloan, with an advantage in height and weight, failed to score at long range as Patrick's rights jabbed his face. Sloan used his weight in body work on Patrick, holding with his left until he had him against the ropes. At other periods Sloan's elusiveness frustrated Patrick's leads. A - jolt to the chin floored Sloan for seven seconds in the fifth round, and it was this punch that later caused Patrick's defeat. It was noticeable that he was not using his left, and he complained to his manager at the end of the seventh round. Until the close Sloan overshadowed Patrick, who was further inconvenienced by. a bleeding ear. Tha weights at 2 p.m. were: Sloan 10.7, Patrick 10.0. Tommy Ward (11-.314) won against Hock Kuskey (10.9) at the close of the fourth round. Eon Heron outpointed Archie Rash (9.11) in eight rounds. A 1 Jordan (9.8) outpointed Bobby Brown (9.12) in eight rounds. Jack Samuels (10.3) outpointed Kev. McCarthy (10.3 1 ,?). Les Fuller (9.4',i) outpointed Les.
