STRANDED SOLDIER

The case of a soldier from Marlborough who had been stranded in Auckland with his wife and child owing to illness during the currency of his 28 days leave on free pass was reported in a letter from the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee welfare officer to the R.S.A. executive last night soldier was taken ill owing to his war wounds and was removed to hospital, his warrant expiring while he was a patient, and his funds also became exhausted. His leave warrant was cancelled and application to various authorities failed to have an extension granted. Members expressed indignation at the plight the soldier and his family had been placed in, and it was decided to communicate first with headquarters of the R.S.A. in Wellington, and, if necessary, to register a strong protest with the Minister concerned and demand an assurance that similar occurrences should be avoided.
