PETTIT CUP
DISTANCE SWIMMING WOMAN WINS FOR FIRST TIME Forty-nine swimmers competed in one or more of the seven distance events held under the auspices of the Auckland Swimming Centre last summer. They were aspirants for the Pettit Cup, awarded annually to the candidate gaining most points, based on one for a start, three for a win, two for second and one for third place. For the first time in the history of the trophy a woman became holder of it, Joyce Richardson (Waitemata) putting up the final tally of 19. She was unplaced once only. In her other five starts she gained three first places, was second and third once.
The only other to take part in all seven starts was C. W. Conza (formerly of Greymouth), whose 14 points included a first, a second and a couple of thirds. He was another Waitemata member, as also was W. Somers, who shared third place (9 points) with J. Stoddard (North Shore). Somers started four times, and had one victory and a second, while Stoddart's only place was a first in six starts. A. Morgan (Ponsonby) was fifth, with seven points, and he was followed by a triple tie of six points by A. Woolley (North Shore), Barry Clench (North Shore, the 1942-43 Auckland 100 yds champion) and Miss Cranney (Parnelt). \ Miss Richardson, who is now at the Teachers' Training College, has been giving instructional displays in the province in the technique of swimming and life-saving. -
