DEATH AT SEVENTY

INSPECTOR J. FITZPATRICK (0.C.) NAPIER, this day. A former member of the Police Department, Inspector James Fitzpatrick, has died at the age of 70. Inspector Fitzpatrick was first stationed as a constable at Wanganui. Later he was transferred to the charge of the Marton police .sub-dis-trict. He Avas promoted to the rank of sergeant and transferred to Wellington, and later to Palmerston North. There he was promoted to the rank of senior-sergeant and transferred to Gisborne, subsequently receiving promotion to the rank of sub-inspector and being transferred to Christchurch. At Christchurch he was promoted to the rank of inspector and transferred to the charge of the Greymouth district, and finally he was transferred to the charge of the Napier police district. He held this post for five years until his retirement in February, 1938, after 40 vears' service with the force.

During his career in the force, Inspector Fitzpatrick was awarded the long service good conduct medal and three silver clasps and stars for the discharge of his police duties in an efficient manner. He was also the recipient of the King's Coronation Medal. In his younger days, Inspector Fitzpatrick was a well known athlete in Canterbury.
