RATIONING WATER SUPPLIES
VOLUNTARY rationing of water to eight gallons a day urged upon Aucklanders by the City Council should have the instant support of every citizen. If that is not immediately and cheerfully given much more drastic measures will be necessary, and they will impose much greater hardship. Every individual should make it his duty to comply with the suggestion and to see that members of his household follow his lead. If that be done it is probable that the daily run-in to the riarng will just keep supplies going, and the city will escape with a minimum of inconvenience and of danger \to health. Everybody is prodigal in the use of water under normal circumstances, and rightly so, but,- abnormal conditions,- due to an exceptionally dry spell and unexpectedly heavy demands for camps and war industries, demand an entire change of outlook for a little while. The co-operation of everybody is essential, because the savings which must be made are a matter of individual effort. They will be made if everybody realises the nature and extent of the crisis which has arisen. The shortage is here, brief showers of the type which fell this morning will not offer any real improvement, and until soaking rains develop the best use possible must be made of the six million gallons a day now available. The City Council has made a reasonable appeal, and has suggested an allowance J which, with care, can be made to carry consumers through from day to day. Let us determine to give it the support for which it asks, in the interests of ourselves and of our neighbours.
