SUNDAY CRISIS
UNLESS RAIN FALLS
VANISHING RESERVES
Auckland's water reserves had shrunk to the 20,000,000 gallons mark this morning, and it is considered that they will be exhausted by Sunday evening unless heavy rain relieves the position. The daily consumption of water is 13,000,000 gallons. If the reserves are exhausted it is considered there will be only 6,000,000 gallons available daily from all sources, including the Western Springs, Henderson Creek and Onehunga'and Otahuhu pumping plants. This means that there will be a gap of 7,000,000 gallons daily to be bridged. City authorities were fully exploring the matter this morning, and a plan is being prepared to meet the possible situation that may arise next week. Officials expressed the opinion to-day that if domestic consumption could be restricted to eight gallons a head a day, a supply could be kept over all the area so that people would have the benefit of having water at taps, and also in the mains for fire protection.
