OVERCOME BY FUMES
INCIDENT IN SHIP'S HOLD IRON LUNGS FOB VICTIMS (0.C.) SYDNEY, May 4. An urgent call was sent to two hospitals in an Australian port on Saturday to have their iron lungs prepared for a ship's officers and members of the crew who had been oversome by carbon monoxide fumes. Three officers were working a petrol-driven pump in a hold when they were suddenly overcome and just had time to call out. Holding a wet handkerchief over his nose and mouth, an electrician went into the hold, pulled the plug lead out of the engine, thus stopping it, and then himself was overcome. Other men went into the hold and rescued all the affected men. Most of them were allowed to go home after treatment, but three were admitted to hospital.
