OBITUARY
MR. GEORGE GODKIN (0.C.) THAMES, this day. A well-known figure in musical and sporting circles throughout the Thames district, Mr. George Godkin, has died in Auckland at the age of 73. He started his musical career with the Thames Naval Band, and later conducted many bands and orchestras throughout Australia and New Zealand. As a young man he was prominent in rowing and other sports. In 1894 he went to Broken Hill, Australia, joining the band there, and later becoming bandmaster of the A.M.A. band. He also had an orchestra called Godkin's String Band. He returned to New Zealand in 1909 to take up the conductorship of the Waihi Federal Band, and during the Great War was deputybandmaster of the Auckland Mounted Rifles Band. Mr. Godkin was a member of the Barrier Masonic Lodge, No. 173, New South Wales, also the Foresters' Lodge Court Pride of the North, at Thames. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. There are 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
