LUNCHEON AT No. 10
MR. JONES ENTERTAINED N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 10.30 a.m. LONDON, April 16. The Prime Minister, Mr. Churchill, expressed the highest praise for the New Zealand Division when the Dominion Defence Minister, Mr. Jones, lunched at No. 10, Downing Street. Mr. Churchill recalled his pleasure at meeting the New Zealanders at Tripoli. Others at the luncheon included Mrs. Churchill the Duchess of Buccleuch and Colonel Reitz, South African High Commissioner.
Last night Mr. Jones spent two hours at an ordnance factory with Mr. Duncan Sandys, M.P. He was told that only 10 per cent of the workers were skilled and that 50 per cent of the staff were women and girls, of whom 75 per cent .were married. They worked an 11-hour day.
This morning Mr. Jones visited Woolwich, where he saw guns in the making for New Zealand.
